🍲 Geumsan Samgyetang Festival 2026 | Korea's Famous Ginseng Chicken Soup Festival - Complete Guide
When the brutal summer heat wears you down, restoring your energy with a hot bowl of samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) is a cherished Korean summer tradition. But did you know there's an entire festival dedicated to this beloved dish? It's the Geumsan Samgyetang Festival in Chungnam Province — Korea's first-ever festival themed around samgyetang, the nation's representative summer health food.
Geumsan is famous as "the home of ginseng." True to its reputation, the Geumsan Samgyetang Festival lets you taste authentic Geumsan samgyetang made with large, premium ginseng roots. But this is far more than just a soup-eating festival. You can taste modern fusion dishes made with ginseng and chicken tailored to younger palates, enjoy family water-play attractions to beat the summer heat, experience various health programs using medicinal herbs, and enjoy nighttime performances that make you forget the tropical heat. It's Geumsan's signature summer festival, satisfying the whole family's appetite, health, and sense of fun all at once.
Samgyetang is a beloved K-food among international visitors too. Here's everything you need to know about the Geumsan Samgyetang Festival, where you can savor the deep flavor of chicken slow-simmered with ginseng, jujubes, and glutinous rice — right in its hometown!

The 2026 Geumsan Samgyetang Festival runs from July 10 (Friday) to July 12 (Sunday) — three days at the Geumsan World Ginseng Expo Plaza in Geumsan-eup, Geumsan County, Chungnam Province. The location is 30 Insam-gwangjang-ro, Geumsan-eup, Geumsan County.
This festival is held in July, when the serious summer heat begins. In Korea, there's a tradition called "iyeolchiyeol" (fighting heat with heat) — eating hot samgyetang during the hottest dog days of summer (sambok) to overcome the heat. The Geumsan Samgyetang Festival is held precisely during this period, making it especially meaningful.
Admission is free, with only samgyetang purchases and some experiences requiring payment. It's hosted by the Geumsan Culture & Tourism Festival Foundation, and inquiries can be made at 041-750-2319. Detailed information is available on the official website.
The heart of the Geumsan Samgyetang Festival is undoubtedly samgyetang — and authentic samgyetang enjoyed in Geumsan, the home of ginseng, no less.
At the Geumsan Samgyetang Sales Corner, you can taste authentic samgyetang made with large Geumsan ginseng roots. Samgyetang is Korea's representative health food, made by stuffing a young chicken with glutinous rice, ginseng, jujubes, and garlic, then slow-simmering it. The hot broth, tender chicken, and subtle ginseng aroma blend together to make it the ultimate restorative dish. Since Geumsan is the homeland of ginseng, even the quality of the ginseng in this samgyetang is different from what you'd find elsewhere.
At the "Samsam" Chicken Food Corner, you can taste fusion convenience foods made with ginseng and chicken. These are modern reinterpretations for younger generations or international visitors who might find traditional samgyetang too heavy. Beyond these, there are abundant food options including a Geumsan summer health food corner, a Geumsan handmade dessert corner, and a summer food truck corner.
At night, a Starlight Night Flea Market opens, letting you enjoy shopping and food together.

The Geumsan Samgyetang Festival is full of cool water-play attractions to beat the heat, not just food.
Geumsan Summer Samcance is a family water-play program. The name cleverly combines "sam" (ginseng) and "vacance" (vacation). You can enjoy cool water play with children and blast away the midsummer heat. Restoring your body with samgyetang and cooling off with water play is a perfect combination for summer.
At the Geumsan Herb Experience Hall, you can do health experiences using various medicinal herbs including ginseng. Geumsan is famous not only for ginseng but also as a home of medicinal herbs. You can learn about the benefits of herbs and experience them firsthand to take care of your health. At the Health Cooking Class, you can make nutritious healthy dishes yourself.
Family summer cultural experience programs also operate, ensuring abundant activities for the whole family to enjoy together.

The nights of the Geumsan Samgyetang Festival are full of diverse performances. Nighttime stages help you forget the tropical heat.
At the K-Samgyetang & Convenience Food Competition, cooking contests themed around samgyetang and ginseng dishes unfold. At the Star Chef Dinner Cooking Show, you can watch famous chefs demonstrate their cooking. For those interested in cuisine, these are genuinely fascinating programs.
At the Summer Night Romantic Busking and the Summer Cool Concert, you can enjoy refreshing music performances. The most intriguing is the Tropical Night Sammaek Party! The name combines "sam" (ginseng) and "maek" (beer) — a summer night party enjoyed with special ginseng-based drinks. On a hot summer night, the festival's energy combined with cool music makes you forget the tropical heat entirely.
Beyond these, various side events are prepared including a K-Food Samgyetang Academic Seminar, a Geumsan Samgyetang delivery event, and ginseng shopping events.
Geumsan is located in the southern part of Chungnam Province. It's close to Daejeon, giving it good accessibility.
KTX + Bus combination is the fastest method. Take the KTX from Seoul Station to Daejeon Station (about 1 hour), then a Geumsan-bound bus from Daejeon (about 40 minutes to 1 hour). Geumsan-bound intercity buses run frequently from Daejeon Complex Terminal or Seodaejeon.
Express Bus runs from Seoul's Central City Terminal to Geumsan, taking about 2.5 to 3 hours.
Driving takes about 2.5 hours from Seoul. It's close to the Geumsan IC on the Tongyeong-Daejeon Expressway. Parking is available at the Geumsan World Ginseng Expo Plaza festival grounds.
Since Geumsan is close to Daejeon, using Daejeon as a base camp and visiting as a day trip is also a great option.
Geumsan is a small county with limited accommodation. Staying in nearby Daejeon is a great alternative. As a major city, Daejeon has plenty of accommodations and conveniences, and Geumsan is close by car.
True to its reputation as the home of ginseng, Geumsan has many ginseng-related attractions. Geumsan Ginseng Market is Korea's largest ginseng market, where you can browse and buy fresh ginseng and ginseng products. Just walking through the market filled with the aroma of ginseng is a unique experience. At the Geumsan Ginseng Center, you can learn about the history and benefits of ginseng.
For natural attractions, Daedunsan Provincial Park is famous. Known for its dramatic rock formations, cable car, and cloud bridge, it's a renowned mountain great for hiking and trekking. Chilbaeguichong is the burial site of 700 righteous soldiers who died during the Imjin War, holding deep historical significance.
Geumsan's food is not to be missed either. Beyond samgyetang, try various ginseng dishes and unique foods like ginseng tempura and ginseng makgeolli. Ginseng fish porridge is another Geumsan delicacy!

Samgyetang is a hot dish, so eating it in midsummer makes you sweat a lot. But that's exactly the charm of "iyeolchiyeol" (fighting heat with heat)! Enjoy it with a cool drink. The samgyetang sales corner gets crowded during meal times, so going a bit early to claim a spot is wise.
If you plan to join the water-play programs, bring a change of clothes and a towel. If you're with children, be sure to pack water-play essentials.
As a peak-summer outdoor festival, heat preparation is essential. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and possibly a parasol, and stay hydrated. A portable fan is useful too.
Mid-July may overlap with the monsoon season. Bring an umbrella or rain poncho. Some outdoor programs may change if it rains, so check the schedule before visiting.
If you've made it to Geumsan, ginseng shopping is recommended. Buying fresh ginseng or red ginseng products at Geumsan Ginseng Market makes a great souvenir. Korean ginseng is a popular gift for international visitors! Bring cash too — it's convenient for samgyetang purchases and market shopping.

For international foodies, samgyetang is one of Korea's most accessible and beloved dishes — a whole young chicken stuffed with glutinous rice, ginseng, and jujubes, simmered into a nourishing, comforting soup. Unlike spicy Korean dishes that can challenge unaccustomed palates, samgyetang is gentle, savory, and deeply satisfying, making it a perfect introduction to Korean cuisine.
What makes the Geumsan festival special is experiencing this dish in the very place that produces Korea's finest ginseng. The concept of "iyeolchiyeol" — eating hot soup to beat the heat — is a fascinating cultural insight that surprises many visitors. Combined with the chance to explore Korea's largest ginseng market, taste unique ginseng-infused foods and drinks, and bring home premium ginseng souvenirs, the Geumsan Samgyetang Festival offers an authentic, delicious window into Korean food culture and the ancient wisdom of eating for wellness.
