🗓️ June Festivals
🎤 BTS World Tour ARIRANG Busan Concerts (June 12~13)
The Busan leg of BTS's massive ARIRANG world tour is one of the most anticipated events of the entire summer. June 13th holds special significance — it's BTS's debut anniversary, making these concerts among the most emotionally charged shows of the entire world tour.
After the tour was announced, international travel searches for Busan surged by an astonishing 2,375%. Tickets sold out instantly, but live viewings at CGV, Lotte Cinema, and Megabox theaters will broadcast the concerts nationwide — worth trying for cancellation tickets if you're in Korea during this period.
Combining the concert with a Busan trip means you can also experience Haeundae Beach, Gwangalli's famous night bridge views, and Gamcheon Culture Village — making it an incredible multi-day experience.

🏖️ Haeundae Sand Festival (June)
Busan's Haeundae Beach hosts this internationally recognized sand sculpture festival every June. World-class artists create massive sand sculptures that line the beach, and visitors can participate in hands-on sand art programs. The festival is free, located right on Haeundae Beach, and pairs perfectly with a day of swimming, Blue Line Park Sky Capsule rides, and Haeundae's famous seafood restaurants.
Busan subway Line 2 to Haeundae Station, then a 10-minute walk to the beach. Admission is free.
🗓️ July Festivals
🌊 Boryeong Mud Festival (July 24 ~ August 9)
This is the one. The festival that puts Korean summers on the global map.
The Boryeong Mud Festival is held at Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, Chungnam, and it's Korea's most iconic global summer festival. The festival features massive mud slides, giant mud pools, a beach waterpark, and nighttime performances. K-pop concerts, ocean fireworks shows, and EDM events make it a "summer holy ground" for young travelers! KKday
What makes Boryeong special isn't just the mud — it's the atmosphere. Thousands of strangers from dozens of countries laughing together while covered head to toe in mineral-rich mud creates a sense of connection that's hard to describe until you've experienced it. The foreign visitor ratio at this festival is the highest of any Korean festival, making it an incredible place to meet people from all over the world.
Getting there from Seoul takes about 2.5 hours by express bus to Boryeong Terminal. During the festival, shuttle buses run between the terminal and Daecheon Beach. The most critical tip for Boryeong: book your accommodation at least one month in advance. Hotels and guesthouses near the beach sell out completely weeks before the festival starts. This is not an exaggeration — if you wait until July to book, you may end up sleeping an hour away from the beach.
Bring clothes you don't mind getting permanently muddy. Wear shoes you can throw away afterward. Leave your phone in a waterproof pouch (you can buy one at the festival entrance for about 5,000 won). And most importantly — commit fully. Half-covered-in-mud is not nearly as fun as fully-covered-in-mud.

🍗 Daegu Chimaek Festival (July 1~5)
If there's one food combination that defines Korean culture, it's chimaek — fried chicken and beer. And there's no better place to celebrate it than the Daegu Chimaek Festival.
Held at Duryu Park in Daegu, this festival draws enormous crowds every summer night. What started as a simple food event has evolved into a full summer nightlife experience, with water concerts, DJ performances, and nighttime picnic atmospheres that have dramatically increased the proportion of visitors in their 20s and 30s. KKday
Dozens of Korea's best chicken brands set up booths, each offering their signature flavors. You grab a table, order a few different styles of chicken, crack open ice-cold beers, and enjoy live music performances under the warm summer sky. Repeat until you physically cannot eat another piece of chicken — which takes longer than you'd think.
Daegu is about 1 hour 40 minutes from Seoul by KTX. Take Daegu subway Line 2 to Duryu Station, and the festival grounds are a 5-minute walk. Evenings after 6PM are when the atmosphere really peaks — arrive early to claim a good table.
🎵 Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival (July, dates TBA)
Korea's largest rock festival features an international lineup every year across multiple stages. Held at Songdo Moonlight Festival Park in Incheon over three days, the festival combines well-known international acts with rising Korean indie bands in an open-air setting that celebrates musical freedom.
Being in the greater Seoul area means you can attend as a day trip — no accommodation booking needed if you're staying in Seoul. Check the official lineup announcements starting in May.

🗓️ August Festivals
🏖️ Busan Sea Festival (Early August)
The Busan Sea Festival runs across multiple beaches simultaneously — Haeundae, Gwangalli, and Songjeong — with concerts, water activities, and nighttime shows that amplify the already incredible summer energy of Korea's coastal capital. KKday
During the day, beaches offer water sports competitions, sand activities, and swimming events. After sunset, the festival transforms into an open-air concert and party scene with fireworks, DJ sets, and food stalls lining every beach. The advantage of the Busan Sea Festival is that it covers several beaches at once, so you can beach-hop throughout the day and experience different atmospheres at each location.
If you're already planning a summer Busan trip, checking whether your dates overlap with the Sea Festival is absolutely worth it — it adds an entirely extra dimension to the experience at no additional cost.

🪷 Buyeo Seodong Lotus Festival (Mid-July ~ Early August)
The ancient Baekje Kingdom site of Gungnamji Pond in Buyeo transforms into a sea of blooming lotus flowers every summer. Walking through a field of lotus flowers at a 1,500-year-old historical site is the kind of experience that feels almost too beautiful to be real.
The best time to visit is early morning before sunrise, when mist rises from the pond and the lotus flowers are at their most open and photogenic. Photographers travel from across Korea specifically for these dawn shots.
Buyeo is about 2 hours from Seoul by express bus. Admission to the festival is free. Combine it with visits to other Baekje historical sites nearby for a full day of culture and nature.
🌻 Taean Sunflower Festival (Late July ~ August)
Endless fields of golden sunflowers stretching to the horizon — that's the Taean Sunflower Festival in a single sentence. Located in Chungnam province, this festival has become one of Korea's most Instagrammed summer events. The visual impact of standing in the middle of thousands of sunflowers all facing the same direction is genuinely stunning.
Taean is about 2.5 hours from Seoul by bus. Combine with nearby Taean beaches for a sunflowers-in-the-morning, beach-in-the-afternoon perfect summer day.

🗓️ Year-Round Must-Know Festivals
🏮 Yeondeunghoe — Lotus Lantern Festival (Around Buddha's Birthday)
Every year around the 8th day of the 4th lunar month, thousands of colorful lanterns fill the streets of Seoul from Jogyesa Temple through Jongno. The lantern parade is one of the most visually spectacular events in Korea — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage that draws visitors from around the world.
The combination of ancient Buddhist tradition and breathtaking visual beauty makes this one of the most uniquely Korean experiences available. Even if you're not Buddhist, the parade is genuinely awe-inspiring.
🎪 K-Culture Travel Week
Organized by the Korea Tourism Organization, this annual event features special discounts, free cultural experiences, and K-pop events specifically designed for international visitors. In 2025, Gwanghwamun Square hosted a Squid Game parade and fan event that went viral worldwide. Watch for 2026 announcements on the VISITKOREA website.
💡 Korea Festival Travel Tips
Planning a trip around Korean festivals requires a slightly different approach than regular travel.
Accommodation is the number one priority. For major festivals like Boryeong Mud Festival, nearby hotels and guesthouses sell out a full month in advance. The moment festival dates are confirmed, book your accommodation immediately. Waiting even a week can mean the difference between a convenient beachside hotel and a motel an hour's drive away.
Transportation gets congested during festivals. Roads near festival venues become extremely crowded, so public transport is almost always the better choice. Most large festivals operate shuttle buses from the nearest train station or bus terminal — check the official festival website for shuttle information before you go.
Summer festivals are outdoor events. Sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water are non-negotiable. Dehydration sneaks up fast when you're having fun in 30+ degree heat. Bring a small portable fan — Koreans carry them everywhere in summer and you'll understand why within minutes.
Bring cash. Festival vendor stalls and food trucks frequently accept cash only. Having 30,000 to 50,000 won in small bills will prevent frustrating moments when you're standing in front of delicious food with only a credit card.
Verify dates before finalizing plans. Festival dates can shift due to weather or organizational changes. Always check the official festival website or the Korea Tourism Organization site (visitkorea.or.kr) for the most current schedule before booking transportation and accommodation.
