Imagine, in the heart of summer, Asia's largest pond blanketed in pure white lotus blossoms. Across 100,000 pyeong (roughly 330,000 square meters) of green lotus leaves, white lotus flowers (baengnyeon) rise with quiet nobility, revealing their pristine white blooms. This is the Muan Lotus Festival in Jeonnam Province — Korea's largest single lotus festival and one of the country's premier summer flower festivals.

What makes the Muan Lotus Festival truly special is the white lotus. Unlike the pink lotus (hongnyeon) most people are familiar with, the lotus flowers of Muan's Hoesan White Lotus Pond are pure white. The white lotus is itself a symbol of nobility and purity, and the waves of white blossoms spreading across 100,000 pyeong create a spectacular sight unlike any other lotus festival in Korea. Hoesan White Lotus Pond is the largest natural white lotus habitat in all of Asia, and its overwhelming scale alone makes it worth the visit.

Started in 1997 and held every summer at Hoesan White Lotus Pond in Illo-eup, here's everything you need to know about this magnificent festival!

📅 2026 Essential Information

The 2026 Muan Lotus Festival runs from June 26 (Friday) to June 28 (Sunday) — three days at Hoesan White Lotus Pond in Illo-eup, Muan County, Jeonnam Province. The location is 333 Baengnyeon-ro, Illo-eup, Muan County.

The festival's stage, Hoesan White Lotus Pond, is the largest natural white lotus habitat in Asia. This vast pond, spanning a remarkable 100,000 pyeong (about 330,000 square meters), is entirely covered with white lotus flowers. This overwhelming scale is hard to imagine without seeing it firsthand. The endlessly spreading green lotus leaves and the pure white flowers blooming among them form a massive work of art created by nature.

Admission is free, with only some experience programs charging a fee. For inquiries, call 061-450-5472, and detailed information is available on the Muan County official website. Lotus flowers typically peak in July-August, so you can enjoy the white lotus throughout the summer even beyond the festival dates.

🪷 White Lotus — Muan's Special Charm

The heart of the Muan Lotus Festival is undoubtedly the white lotus (baengnyeon) — what sets Muan apart from other lotus festivals.

White lotus flowers are rarer to see than pink lotus (hongnyeon). The landscape created by pure white petals harmonizing with green lotus leaves is pristine and elegant. The white lotus has long been regarded as a symbol of nobility, purity, and cleanliness. Just as the lotus blooms in mud yet remains untainted by it, Muan's white lotus boasts a clear, pure beauty.

As you walk through Hoesan White Lotus Pond, white lotus flowers surround you in every direction. You can stroll along the deck pathways installed over the pond to admire the white lotus up close. Visiting in the early morning, when the lotus flowers bloom most beautifully, lets you encounter the mystical sight of white lotus rising through the morning mist. For photography enthusiasts, it's truly paradise.

🎤 Performances & Experience Programs

The Muan Lotus Festival is full of various programs beyond white lotus viewing.

Main performances include the opening celebration concert, the SUM:ON concert, and a citizens' singing contest. Performances set against the white lotus pond on a summer evening add a romantic atmosphere.

Side programs are abundant too. There's a Water Rock Festival to fully enjoy the cool summer, a Hwangtogol cooking competition using Muan's local specialties, a children's reading quiz bowl, and more — entertainment for all ages.

Visitor participation programs include lotus tea tasting, which is popular. You can enjoy fragrant tea made from lotus flowers while relaxing. Permanent facilities like an animal farm and a floating glass greenhouse also operate, popular with families.

🌙 Lotus Light Moonlight Night Walk

A hidden charm of the Muan Lotus Festival is its nighttime program. The Lotus Light Moonlight Night Walk is a special program for enjoying the white lotus pond at night.

When the sun sets and darkness falls, Hoesan White Lotus Pond is bathed in soft lighting. A mysterious, dreamlike atmosphere unfolds — completely different from the pristine white lotus of daytime. The flowers lit by illumination and the light reflected in the water blend together to create a fantastic night view. On a cool summer evening, the night walk through the white lotus pond is a special experience unique to the Muan Lotus Festival.

The recommended course is to admire the white lotus during the day, enjoy performances in the evening, and finish with the Lotus Light Moonlight Night Walk at night. You can savor the diverse charms of the white lotus pond all day long.

🚆 Getting to Muan

Muan is located in the southwestern part of Jeonnam Province. It's also home to Muan International Airport.

KTX + Bus combination is the most common method. Take the KTX from Seoul Yongsan Station to Naju Station or Mokpo Station, then transfer to a Muan-bound bus. Muan is fairly close to Mokpo.

Express Bus runs from Seoul's Central City Terminal to Muan or Mokpo, taking about 4 to 4.5 hours.

Driving takes about 4.5 hours from Seoul. Parking is available at Hoesan White Lotus Pond. It can get congested on festival weekends, so arriving early is best.

Hoesan White Lotus Pond is a bit removed from Muan's town center, so a car or taxi is more convenient than public transport. Using Mokpo as a base camp and visiting Muan as a day trip is also a great option.

🏨 Accommodation & Muan-Mokpo Tourism

Muan is a small county with limited accommodation. Staying in nearby Mokpo is a great alternative. As a tourist city, Mokpo has plenty of accommodations and restaurants, and Muan is close by car.

Muan and the surrounding area are full of attractive destinations. Muan Tidal Flat is a pristine mudflat registered as a Ramsar Wetland, where you can do ecological experiences. Muan is also famous for onions and octopus, so the food is abundant. In particular, Muan baby octopus (sebal-nakji) is a nationally famous delicacy.

Nearby Mokpo is a modern historical city with many attractions including Mokpo Modern History Museum, Yudalsan Mountain, Mokpo Skywalk, and a cable car. It's also famous as a filming location for the drama "Hotel Del Luna." Crossing the Sinan Cheonsa Bridge to visit Purple Island (Banwoldo-Bakjido) makes for an even richer southern Korea trip.

Be sure to enjoy Muan's food too. At the festival, you can taste lotus dishes like lotus leaf rice, lotus root bibimbap, lotus root cold noodles, and lotus root seafood pancakes. Seeing white lotus and enjoying lotus cuisine makes for a perfect Muan trip!

💡 Visitor Tips

To see the lotus flowers at their most beautiful, an early morning visit is recommended. Lotus flowers open wide in the morning and close in the midday heat. The landscape of white lotus bathed in morning sunlight and harmonizing with the mist is truly magical.

As a peak-summer outdoor festival, heat preparation is essential. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and possibly a parasol, and stay hydrated. Since there isn't much shade around the pond, be well-prepared for the heat.

Late June to early July may overlap with the monsoon season. Rain gives the lotus flowers another charm with raindrops on the petals, but bring an umbrella or rain poncho. The white lotus pond has its own elegant atmosphere even on rainy days.

Lotus bloom conditions vary each year depending on the weather. Checking bloom updates on Muan County's official website or social media (@muancounty_festival) before visiting is helpful.

Wear comfortable shoes. Exploring the 100,000-pyeong white lotus pond requires a lot of walking. Bring a portable battery too — you'll take so many photos of the white lotus! Both day and night offer different charms, so visiting with time to spare is recommended.

🌟 Why the White Lotus Captivates International Visitors

For travelers seeking a side of Korea beyond the bustling cities, the Muan Lotus Festival offers something genuinely rare and serene. While pink lotus ponds exist throughout Asia, a pond of this scale filled entirely with pure white lotus is extraordinary — and deeply photogenic in a way that resonates across cultures.

In Buddhist and East Asian symbolism, the white lotus represents purity of mind and spiritual awakening — rising immaculate from the mud below. Standing before 100,000 pyeong of these flowers at dawn, mist drifting across the water, offers a moment of stillness and beauty that feels almost meditative. Combined with nearby Mokpo's coastal charm, the Ramsar-protected tidal flats, and authentic southern Korean cuisine, the Muan Lotus Festival is the kind of tranquil, off-the-beaten-path discovery that turns a Korea trip into something unforgettable.
