💦 Jangheung Water Festival Complete Guide | Korea's Songkran! Water Fights · Water Sports · Dates · Transport 2026!

by Korea Guide 2026. 6. 10.

If you want to wash away the brutal summer heat in the most fun way possible, head to Jangheung in South Jeolla Province. The Jeongnamjin Jangheung Water Festival transforms an entire city into a giant water playground centered on the crystal-clear Tamjin River — and it's frequently called "Korea's Songkran" for its epic, city-wide water fights.

The Jangheung Water Festival is one of Korea's premier summer festivals, officially designated as a Cultural Tourism Festival by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Built around the pristine water resources of the Tamjin River and Jangheung Dam Lake, every program connects to the theme of "water = health and healing." Day and night, the diverse programming offers everyone — regardless of age — a complete escape from the summer heat and the stresses of daily life.

What makes this festival especially notable for international visitors is its global ambitions. The festival has signed cooperation agreements with the organizers of Thailand's Songkran Festival and Italy's Venice Carnival, actively growing into a truly global event. With dedicated efforts to attract foreign tourists, it's a perfect summer destination for Korean and international travelers alike.

📅 2026 Essential Information

The 19th Jeongnamjin Jangheung Water Festival runs from July 25 (Saturday) to August 2 (Sunday), 2026 — nine days across the Tamjin River, Cypress Forest Woodland, and the Papillon ZIP area. The timing falls perfectly during Korea's peak summer vacation season, making it easy to incorporate into your holiday plans.

The festival centers on the Tamjin River, using the clear river that runs through the city as the stage for water play and water sports. Jangheung was selected as the top festival representing South Jeolla Province this year, once again proving its competitiveness among Korea's summer festivals.

Most programs are free to enjoy, with only some water sports requiring a small usage fee. The official website is jangheung.go.kr/festival.

💦 Signature Programs — A Celebration of Water!

The heart of the Jangheung Water Festival is participatory programming where you "jump right into the water." This isn't a festival you watch — it's one you experience with your whole body.

🌊 The World's Biggest Water Fight & Salsu Daecheop Street Parade

The festival's highlight is undoubtedly "The World's Biggest Water Fight." Hundreds of people armed with water guns and buckets engage in a massive street-wide water battle — fun enough to earn the festival its "Korea's Songkran" nickname. During the "Salsu Daecheop Street Parade," everyone marches together spraying water, blasting away not just the heat but all your stress in one go. The key is to participate fully prepared to get completely soaked!

🐟 Catch the Golden Fish (Giant Eel)!

This is a hands-on experience where you wade directly into the Tamjin River and catch fish with your bare hands. Unlike fish-catching events in other regions that usually feature a single species, here you can catch various species living in the Tamjin River — eel, catfish, carp, crucian carp, and more. As staff release the fish and participants leap into the water on the signal, cheers erupt everywhere. If you're lucky, you might catch the "golden fish" — a giant eel! You can catch them bare-handed or use a rental net for a small fee.

🎉 Global Water World & Starlight Moonlight Youth Zone

"Global Water World" is a pool party where refreshing water meets music. The "Starlight Moonlight Youth Zone" is a special nighttime space for younger visitors, keeping the festival energy alive after dark. With water play during the day and music and performances at night, there's entertainment around the clock.

🚣 Water Sports Programs

A wide variety of water activities are available on the Tamjin River — water bicycles, wooden boats, canoes, banana boats, rafts, flyboards, disco pang-pang, and a permanent swimming pool! Everyone can enjoy activities suited to their comfort level.

The festival is especially popular with families. Children can play happily in the permanent swimming pool and on the disco pang-pang, while adults can take canoes or wooden boats to enjoy the river's scenery. Extreme water sports like flyboarding are particularly popular with younger visitors.

Beyond water activities, there are also diverse programs like igloo experiences, eco-friendly electric car rides, and traditional games — so even those who prefer to stay dry can fully enjoy the festival.

🌲 Cypress Forest Woodland — Healing After the Water Play!

One reason the Jangheung Water Festival is special is that you can enjoy both water play and forest healing in one trip. One of the festival venues, the Cypress Forest Woodland, is a healing forest dense with cypress trees.

After an exhilarating round of water play, strolling through the cypress forest cleanses both body and mind in the fresh, phytoncide-rich air. It's a course that perfectly embodies the festival theme of "water = health and healing." The cypress forest contains walking trails, foot bath facilities, and accommodations (Woodland), making it ideal for a 2-day healing trip.

Papillon ZIP is a unique lodging and experience space inspired by the film "Papillon," where you can fully enjoy nature in log cabins.

🚆 Getting to Jangheung

Jangheung is located in the southern part of South Jeolla Province. It's a bit far from Seoul, but that distance is exactly what preserves its pristine natural environment.

Express Bus is the most common method. From Seoul's Central City Terminal (Express Bus Terminal), Jangheung takes about 4 hours 30 minutes. If direct buses are limited, you can transfer in Gwangju.

KTX + Bus combination is also possible. Take the KTX from Seoul Yongsan Station to Naju Station or Gwangju Songjeong Station, then transfer to an intercity bus to Jangheung.

Driving takes approximately 4.5 to 5 hours from Seoul. Temporary parking lots operate around the Tamjin River festival grounds, but they fill up early on weekends, so arriving early is wise.

From Jangheung Intercity Bus Terminal, the Tamjin River festival grounds are within walking distance. During the festival, shuttle buses may connect key points — check the official website for details.

🏨 Where to Stay

Jangheung is not a major city, so accommodation is limited. Rooms fill up fast during the festival, so booking early is genuinely important.

Cypress Forest Woodland accommodations are the most popular choice. Close to the festival grounds and offering cypress forest healing as a bonus, they're the ideal option. Various types are available including log cabins and traditional hanok.

Jangheung city center motels and pensions are convenient for their proximity to the Tamjin River festival grounds, with reasonable prices.

Nearby city accommodations are also worth considering. If you can't find a room in Jangheung, you can stay in nearby areas like Gangjin or Boseong and drive in. Boseong in particular is famous for its green tea fields and pairs wonderfully with a festival trip.

Now that the festival dates are confirmed, booking accommodation immediately is recommended!

🍜 Jangheung Food — Have You Heard of Hanu Samhap?

Once you've made it to Jangheung, you must try this region's special cuisine.

Jangheung Hanu Samhap is the region's signature dish. It combines Jangheung Korean beef (hanu), scallop adductor muscle, and shiitake mushrooms grilled together — and the harmony of these three ingredients is phenomenal. Jangheung is famous for all three: hanu, shiitake mushrooms, and scallops, which is how this samhap ("three combination") was born. It's a delicacy famous enough that people travel from across the country to try it.

Maesaengi-guk (seaweed fulvescens soup) is another Jangheung specialty. Made with seaweed grown in pristine seas, this soup is silky smooth and highly nutritious.

Bajirak hoe-muchim (spicy clam salad) and hamo (sea eel) are other fresh seafood you can enjoy in Jangheung. Sourced from the pristine Deukryang Bay, the freshness is unbeatable.

Cool off with the water festival, then fill up on Jangheung hanu samhap for the perfect day!

🗺️ Festival + Namdo Tourism Itinerary

Jangheung makes an excellent base for exploring Korea's Namdo (southern) region, with many attractive destinations nearby.

Boseong Green Tea Fields are about 40 minutes by car from Jangheung. The endless rolling green tea fields are considered one of Korea's most beautiful landscapes. Don't miss the green tea ice cream and green tea latte.

Gangjin is the neighboring region to Jangheung, famous for its celadon kiln sites and the historical sites of Jeong Yak-yong (Dasan), a renowned Korean scholar. Worth a visit if you're interested in history and pottery culture.

Cheongwansan Mountain is Jangheung's famous peak, known for its autumn silver grass but also great for hiking and trekking in summer.

For a 2-day trip, I recommend the water festival + cypress forest healing on day one, then Boseong green tea fields → Namdo traditional cuisine on day two!

💡 Visitor Tips

Since this is a water festival, coming prepared to get completely soaked is essential. A change of clothes and a towel are must-haves. Pack plenty of spare clothing, and store your electronics in a waterproof bag or plastic pouch.

Wear aqua shoes or sandals. Footwear that's fine to get wet and prevents slipping is ideal. Sneakers become uncomfortable for the entire day once they get soaked.

A waterproof phone case lets you take photos even during water play. If you plan to join the water fight, waterproof storage for electronics is mandatory.

Sunscreen is essential for summer outdoor water activities. It washes off in the water, so use a waterproof product and reapply frequently.

Bring 30,000-50,000 won in cash for water sport fees and food from vendors.

The programming splits between daytime water play and nighttime performances and pool parties, so checking the schedule by time slot and planning your route in advance will help you make the most of the festival!

🌟 Why "Korea's Songkran" is Worth Experiencing

For international visitors, especially those familiar with Thailand's famous Songkran water festival, Jangheung offers a fascinating Korean parallel. The joyful chaos of a city-wide water fight, the communal experience of strangers soaking each other with pure delight, the release of summer tension through play — these universal joys take on a uniquely Korean character here, set against the backdrop of a pristine river and a healing cypress forest.

What sets Jangheung apart from Thailand's Songkran is the "healing" dimension. After the adrenaline of the water fights, you can retreat into the quiet of the cypress forest, soak your feet in cool foot baths, and breathe in phytoncide-rich air. It's a festival that understands summer is about both excitement and restoration — making it one of the most well-rounded summer experiences in all of Korea.
