🐟 Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival 2026 | Catch Fish With Your Bare Hands! Korea's Best Summer River Festival Guide

by Korea Guide 2026. 6. 11.

Imagine wading into a crystal-clear mountain stream on a hot summer day, catching fish with your bare hands, and then grilling your fresh catch over charcoal right on the riverbank. This is the Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival — held in the pristine first-grade waters of the Naeseongcheon Stream in Bonghwa, North Gyeongsang Province. Themed around the silver sweetfish (euneo), it's one of Korea's finest summer ecological festivals, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Sweetfish were once so prized they were served at the royal tables of the Joseon Dynasty. These nutritious freshwater fish only live in the cleanest, first-grade upstream waters of rivers like the Nakdong and Seomjin. Bonghwa County, located at the very headwaters of both the Nakdong and Han River systems, celebrates this pristine image with a festival every summer.

This isn't a festival you simply watch — it's one you catch, see, eat, and experience with all five senses. There's even a special bare-hand fishing competition just for international visitors, making it a truly global festival that travelers from anywhere can dive into — literally!

📅 Essential Information

The Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival is typically held in late July to early August along the Naeseongcheon Stream in Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang Province. The exact 2026 dates will be announced on the official Bonghwa Festival Foundation website (bonghwafesta.or.kr), so be sure to confirm before planning your visit.

The festival's stage is the Naeseongcheon Stream. Because Bonghwa sits at the very headwaters of the Nakdong and Han River systems, the water here is genuinely pristine. Playing in this clean first-grade water and catching sweetfish with your own hands creates the kind of special memory you simply cannot make in a city.

Adapting to climate change, the festival is well-equipped with shower facilities, shade tents, and rest areas, so you can enjoy it comfortably even in the peak of summer.

🐟 Signature Experience Programs — Catch Them Yourself!

The heart of the Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival is catching the fish yourself. There are two methods.

🥢 Bandu Net Fishing (Euneo Bandujabi)

A bandu is a net held by two people on either side, swept through the water to catch fish. This bandu fishing experience is easy enough for complete beginners to try. It runs daily during the festival (3 times on weekdays, 4 times on weekends). The general experience fee is around 12,000 won, and you can take your caught sweetfish home or grill them on-site.

✋ Bare-Hand Fishing (Euneo Maeson-japi)

Exactly as the name suggests — catching sweetfish with your bare hands! Grabbing slippery sweetfish barehanded is harder than it looks, which makes the thrill of finally catching one absolutely exhilarating. Watching people chase fish through the water is hilarious for participants and spectators alike. It runs 4 times daily during the festival.

🌍 Catch Me If You Can (International Visitor Fishing Competition)

This is a special program just for international visitors! Called "Catch Me If You Can," it's a bandu fishing competition exclusively for foreign travelers visiting Korea. It's a killer attraction especially popular with international tourists. The unique experience of catching fish in Korea's pristine nature becomes an unforgettable memory — and a fantastic story to bring home.

🏊 Water Play & Family Programs

Beyond fish-catching, there's plenty of refreshing water fun for everyone.

The Children's Water Park is a dedicated play space for kids, with slides and water attractions where children can splash around to their hearts' content. The Naeseongcheon Sand Playground lets kids enjoy clean sand play, making it especially popular with families bringing young children.

Water play attractions and refreshing events like the "Legend Water Bomb Show" help blast away the summer heat in an instant. It's a genuinely wonderful festival for families.

🍢 Sweetfish Cuisine — Eat Your Fresh Catch!

Another great appeal of the Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival is the variety of ways to enjoy fresh sweetfish.

Charcoal-grilled sweetfish is the most popular. Whether you caught them yourself or bought them on-site, grilling sweetfish over charcoal brings out their distinctive flavor — sweetfish are famously said to have a subtle watermelon aroma! — along with a nutty, savory taste. The grilling area operates from 10:00 to 20:00.

Fried sweetfish is another delicacy. Crispy fried sweetfish can be eaten whole, head to tail. You'll find it at the "Crispy! Sweetfish Frying Market."

There's also a live sweetfish market where you can purchase fresh fish directly. If you love freshwater fish, the Bonghwa Sweetfish Festival is paradise!

🎤 Performances & Special Events

Throughout the festival, various performances and events take place. Starting with the opening ceremony celebration, the festival features the Bonghwa Global Song Festival, trot performances, street karaoke, and more.

At night, music events like the "Sweetfish Water Beat Night" and the traditional "Nakhwa-nori" fire play unfold. Nakhwa-nori is a traditional event where charcoal powder wrapped in hanji paper is hung and lit, sending sparks raining down like falling flowers — a spectacular display that illuminates the night sky.

There are also character sing-along shows for children, so the whole family can enjoy it together.

🚆 Getting to Bonghwa

Bonghwa is located in the mountainous region of northern North Gyeongsang Province. The remote location is exactly what preserves its pristine nature, but it means you should plan your transport in advance.

Train is the most scenic option. From Seoul's Cheongnyangni Station to Bonghwa Station takes about 2.5 to 3 hours on the Mugunghwa-ho train. From Bonghwa Station, the Naeseongcheon festival grounds are a short taxi ride away. Taking the Jungang Line train from Cheongnyangni lets you enjoy beautiful mountain scenery out the window.

Express/Intercity Bus runs from Dong Seoul Terminal to Bonghwa, but services are limited, so check the timetable in advance. You can also travel to Andong first and transfer to Bonghwa.

Driving takes about 3 hours from Seoul. Parking is available near the festival grounds but can get congested on weekends.

🏨 Accommodation & Bonghwa Tourism

Bonghwa is a small mountain county with limited accommodation. Rooms fill up quickly during the festival, so book early.

Bonghwa town motels and pensions are convenient for their proximity to the festival grounds. Accommodations near Cheongnyangsan Provincial Park let you heal in the heart of nature.

Bonghwa is full of natural attractions. Cheongnyangsan Mountain is a famous peak where dramatic rock formations meet ancient temples, popular with hikers. The Baekdudaegan National Arboretum is famous for housing the world's largest seed vault and a tiger forest — you can see living Baekdu Mountain tigers, making it especially popular with children. Buncheon Station Santa Village is another unique spot.

Cool off at the festival, then explore Bonghwa's pristine nature for the perfect summer trip!

💡 Visitor Tips

Since this is a water festival, come prepared to get into the water. A swimsuit or clothes you don't mind getting wet, a change of clothes, and a towel are essential. The festival grounds have shower facilities so you can wash up and change after water play.

Wear aqua shoes. The streambed is slippery with rocks, making bare feet or flip-flops dangerous. Non-slip aqua shoes are the safe choice.

Sunscreen and a hat are basics for summer outdoor activities. Since it washes off in the water, use a waterproof product.

Fish-catching experiences are popular and run at scheduled times. Check the experience times in advance, and arrive early to line up for popular slots.

Bring cash for experience fees and purchasing grilled or fried sweetfish.

Since it's a mountain region, there can be temperature swings, so bring a light jacket for the evening!
