Have you heard of Spain's famous tomato festival, La Tomatina, in the small town of Buñol? You can experience that same exhilarating tomato-throwing joy right here in Korea — at the Hwacheon Tomato Festival in Gangwon Province. Dive into pools overflowing with tomatoes, search for a golden ring hidden among them, and return to childhood for one gloriously messy summer day. Drawing over 120,000 visitors every year, it's one of Gangwon Province's premier summer festivals.
When people think of Hwacheon in Gangwon Province, two things come to mind: winter mountain trout (sancheoneo) and summer tomatoes. So why are Hwacheon tomatoes so famously delicious? The secret lies in the pristine natural environment and unique climate conditions. Hwacheon's high elevation and dramatic day-night temperature swings are perfect for boosting tomato sweetness and texture. The large temperature gap helps tomatoes accumulate plenty of sugar, creating a sweeter, richer flavor. Bite into one and sweet juice bursts across your tongue.
Inspired by Spain's tomato festival and launched in 2003, the Hwacheon Tomato Festival has grown into a global event drawing around 1,800 international visitors annually. Here's everything you need to know about this joyful summer celebration that turns everyone — adults, children, and foreigners alike — back into delighted kids!

📅 Essential Information
The Hwacheon Tomato Festival is typically held in early August in the Sachang-ri Culture Village area of Sanae-myeon, Hwacheon County, Gangwon Province. The exact 2026 dates will be announced on the Hwacheon County website or the festival's official site, so be sure to confirm before planning your visit.
What makes this festival special is that there's no separate festival ground — instead, the entire Sachang-ri town streets become the festival venue. The whole village transforms into a celebration. This means the fun is doubled for both participants and spectators alike.
Now in its 21st year, the festival features 6 themes with over 40 programs. Most are free to enjoy, with only some popular experiences like the tomato pool requiring an entry ticket.
🍅 Signature Programs — Dive Into the Tomatoes!
The heart of the Hwacheon Tomato Festival is experiencing tomatoes with your whole body.
💍 Find the Golden Ring!
This is the festival's most overwhelmingly popular program! Participants all jump into a pool filled with tomatoes and search for golden rings hidden among them — a treasure hunt in a sea of tomatoes. The thrill of digging through slippery tomatoes searching for a ring is genuinely exhilarating. If you're lucky enough to find a golden ring, you win a real gold ring as a prize! It's consistently the most popular program with international tourists too.
🍽️ Table for a Thousand
This is a massive event where 1,000 people make and taste tomato dishes together. You can personally create various tomato-based recipes and share them, feeling the warm community spirit of the festival. Made with Hwacheon's fresh tomatoes, the food tastes exceptional.
🏊 Tomato Pool & Water Play Zone
Jumping into a pool full of tomatoes and playing to your heart's content is the highlight of the Hwacheon Tomato Festival. It's a magical space that turns adults, children, and foreigners alike back into delighted kids. People who hesitate to enter the tomatoes at first quickly get comfortable and start having a blast. A cool water play zone is also operated separately to combat the summer heat — perfect for cooling off.

🧊 Beat-the-Heat Programs
Since this festival takes place in the peak heat of August, there are well-designed programs to combat the heat.
The Heat Shelter is a shaded space where you can rest. After playing energetically in the tomato pool, it's a great place to briefly cool down. The Ice Foot Bath Zone lets you soak your feet in cool ice water — refreshing your tired feet in the midsummer heat. Thanks to these thoughtful touches, you can comfortably enjoy the festival even in hot weather.
The swimming pool for children is also a popular course. Even under August's blazing sun, kids play energetically without a care. And smiles bloom on the faces of parents watching their children have fun.
🎤 Performances & Special Events
Various performances unfold throughout the festival. The eve festival features an opening declaration ceremony, celebrity performances, and fireworks. Since Hwacheon is a region with many military bases, there are also unique stages like the "Victory Unit Soldiers' Night" performance.
The "Water Splash Party" is a refreshing event where everyone gets splashed together, blasting away the summer heat in one go. Surprise events pop up throughout the venue, so you never know when or where something fun will happen.
The couples' dance game is also popular. Dance well and you might win the special privilege of taking home 3 boxes of tomatoes as a prize!
Beyond these, the festival is packed with tomato-themed hands-on activities like tomato face pack experiences, tomato seedling planting, and tomato tasting.

🚆 Getting to Hwacheon Sachang-ri
Hwacheon Sachang-ri is located in the mountains of Gangwon Province, so it's good to know your transport options in advance.
Train + Bus combination is the most common method. Take the ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni Station, get off at Namchuncheon Station, then take a bus toward Sanae-myeon Sachang-ri from Chuncheon Intercity Bus Terminal. Alternatively, take the metro from Sangbong Station, get off at Namchuncheon Station, and transfer to a bus.
Express/Intercity Bus: From Chuncheon Intercity Bus Terminal, take a bus to Sachang-ri, which connects directly to the festival area.
Driving: Set your navigation to "Hwacheon-gun Sanae-myeon." It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours from Seoul. Roads can get congested on festival weekends, so leave with plenty of time to spare.
🏨 Accommodation & Hwacheon Tourism
Hwacheon is a small county with limited accommodation. Rooms fill up fast during the festival, so book early.
Pensions and guesthouses near Sachang-ri are convenient for their proximity to the festival grounds. Alternatively, you can stay in Hwacheon town or Chuncheon and drive in. Chuncheon in particular makes an excellent base camp with abundant accommodations and restaurants.
Hwacheon is famous for its pristine nature. Hwacheon Sancheoneo Village is famous for its winter trout festival but is worth visiting in summer too. The Peace Dam and Bisugumi Village are Hwacheon's hidden scenic gems. You can even do tomato harvesting experiences at local Hwacheon tomato farms.
Heading to nearby Chuncheon, you can enjoy dak-galbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) and makguksu (buckwheat noodles), and visit Nami Island. Combining Hwacheon + Chuncheon makes for a perfect Gangwon Province summer trip!

💡 Visitor Tips
If you're going into the tomato pool, come prepared to get wet and covered in tomatoes. Wear clothes you can throw away and avoid white clothing — tomato stains don't come out easily. A change of clothes and a towel are essential. The festival grounds have shower facilities so you can wash up and change.
Wear aqua shoes or sandals. The tomato pool floor is slippery, so non-slip footwear is the safe choice.
A waterproof phone case lets you take photos even in the tomato pool. Don't miss those once-in-a-lifetime shots during the golden ring hunt!
Sunscreen is essential for an August outdoor festival. Use a waterproof product and reapply frequently.
The tomato pool is popular and entry tickets can sell out quickly. Check the time slots in advance and arrive early. Bring cash too — you'll need it for entry tickets and food from vendors.
