🌊 2026 Boryeong Mud Festival Complete Guide | Dates · Tickets · Activities · Transport · Tips!

by Korea Guide 2026. 6. 1.

Every summer, millions of people descend on Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, South Korea for one reason — to cover themselves head to toe in mineral-rich mud and have the time of their lives. Now in its 29th year, the Boryeong Mud Festival is not just Korea's biggest summer festival — it's one of the most unique festivals on the entire planet. No other country in the world has anything quite like it.

Boryeong's coastline stretches an incredible 136 kilometers, and the high-quality natural mud found along these shores has been commercially developed into skincare products. The combination of this exceptional natural mud, the massively popular Daecheon Beach attracting millions of visitors annually, and the city's passionate commitment to the festival created the perfect conditions for the Boryeong Mud Festival to be born. Yulrang

But this isn't just about rolling around in dirt. During the day you'll be sliding down massive mud slides, wrestling strangers in mud pools, and getting natural mud facials on the beach. At night, the festival transforms into a full-blown music festival with K-pop performances, EDM DJ sets, fireworks over the ocean, and hip-hop parties that go late into the summer night. It's two weeks of pure, uninhibited summer joy.

📅 2026 Festival Dates & Basic Information

The 29th Boryeong Mud Festival runs from July 24 (Friday) to August 9 (Sunday), 2026 at Daecheon Beach and surrounding areas in Boryeong. That's a full 17 days of mud-soaked festivities — one of the longest-running festival periods of any Korean summer event. Yulrang

The extended duration gives you plenty of flexibility when planning your visit. That said, opening day (July 24) and the first weekend (July 25-26) are when the energy peaks and the crowds are largest. If you prefer a more relaxed experience with shorter lines and more space in the mud pools, visiting on a weekday is the smart move.

The official festival website is mudfestival.or.kr, where you can check real-time schedule updates, performance lineups, and ticket availability. Bookmark it before your trip — last-minute changes to performance times and special events are common.

🎟️ Tickets & Pricing

The mud experience zones require paid admission. Purchasing a ticket for the General Zone or Family Zone also grants you free access to the Water Park Zone — an excellent bonus value. Ardentnews

Tickets can be pre-purchased on the official website, and early bird discounts are available. Buying early is strongly recommended — not only do you save money, but weekend on-site ticket lines can stretch for 30 minutes or more during peak days.

Pricing differs between weekdays and weekends, with early bird weekday tickets typically available in the 10,000 won range. The exact 2026 pricing is expected to be announced around mid-June on the official website, so check regularly starting in early June.

One important scheduling note: July 24 (Friday) and August 6 (Thursday) are special extended-hours days running from 13:00 to 21:30 with a break from 17:00 to 18:00. August 5 (Wednesday) is a safety inspection day when the experience zones will not operate — avoid planning your visit on that date. Ardentnews

🛁 Mud Experience Programs — What You'll Actually Do

The festival features mud massage areas, giant mud baths, mud mob scenes, color mud zones, mud air bounce inflatables, and tidal flat experiences. Yulrang

The experience zones are divided into the General Zone where you face the ocean while getting completely covered in mud, the Family Zone designed for families with children, and the Water Park Zone. KB

The General Zone is where the real action happens and where most visitors spend the majority of their time. Picture this: a massive pool filled with Boryeong's famous mineral-rich mud, surrounded by hundreds of laughing, screaming people from dozens of different countries. You jump in, slide down enormous mud slides, challenge strangers to mud wrestling matches, and get impromptu mud facials from people you met five minutes ago. The initial hesitation about getting dirty disappears within approximately 30 seconds of entering the mud pool. Boryeong's natural mud is genuinely rich in minerals like germanium and bentonite, which is why the city has built an entire skincare product line around it — so you're technically getting a spa treatment while having the most fun of your summer.

The Family Zone is specifically designed for visitors with young children. Shallower mud pools, gentler activities, and dedicated safety staff make it completely safe for kids to join in the muddy fun.

The Water Park Zone is a free bonus for anyone holding a mud experience zone ticket. After getting thoroughly muddy, cooling off on water slides and splash zones feels absolutely perfect.

🎤 Performances & Nighttime Events

The daytime is for mud. The nighttime is for music.

The festival program includes opening ceremony performances, the DRAK Festival, and hip-hop rave parties. Yulrang

When the sun goes down, the festival's special stage on Daecheon Beach comes alive with K-pop concerts, EDM DJ festivals, and live hip-hop performances. The Mud Song Festival is a particularly entertaining event where participants perform songs while still covered in mud — it's as chaotic and hilarious as it sounds.

Additional programs include the Korean Air Force Black Eagles Air Show, the Mud Train, a drone light show, and community cultural performances. The Black Eagles Air Show features Korea's elite aerobatic flight team performing stunts directly over Daecheon Beach — it's free to watch and consistently one of the most spectacular moments of the entire festival. Check the daily schedule for the exact performance time so you don't miss it. KB

The nighttime drone light show over the ocean is another highlight that draws huge crowds. Hundreds of illuminated drones create patterns and images in the night sky above the water — a stunning end to any festival day.

🚌 Getting to Boryeong — Complete Transport Guide

Boryeong is located on the west coast of Korea, about 2.5 hours south of Seoul. Here's every way to get there.

Express Bus (most popular method): From Seoul's Central City Terminal (Express Bus Terminal), take a bus to Boryeong Terminal. The journey takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes and costs around 15,000 to 18,000 won one way. During the festival period, shuttle buses run regularly between Boryeong Terminal and Daecheon Beach — follow the signs or ask at the terminal information desk.

KTX + Local Bus combination: Take the KTX from Seoul Station to Daejeon Station (approximately 50 minutes), then transfer to an intercity bus from Daejeon to Boryeong (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes). The total travel time is similar to the direct bus, but the KTX portion is more comfortable.

Driving takes about 2.5 to 3 hours from Seoul under normal conditions. However, during festival weekends the roads near Boryeong become extremely congested and parking fills up fast. Unless you absolutely need a car, public transport is the much less stressful option.

The final stretch from Boryeong city center to Daecheon Beach is about 15 minutes by taxi (approximately 8,000 won) or 20 minutes by local bus.

🏨 Where to Stay — Accommodation Guide

This section might be the most important part of this entire guide. If you don't book accommodation at least one month before the festival, you will likely not find anywhere to stay near the beach. This happens every single year without exception.

Pensions and motels near Daecheon Beach are the most convenient choice — you can walk to the festival grounds. But they're also the most expensive during festival season, with prices jumping to 2-3 times their normal rates. Expect to pay 100,000 to 200,000 won per night for what would normally be a 50,000-70,000 won room.

Boryeong city center accommodations are cheaper but require a taxi or bus to reach the beach. If budget is your priority and you don't mind a short commute, this is a solid option.

A day trip from Seoul is absolutely possible and is actually what many Korean visitors do. Leave Seoul early morning, arrive around 10AM, enjoy the mud and evening performances, then catch a late bus back. It's a long day but saves you accommodation costs entirely.

For booking, Korean platforms like Naver Booking, Yanolja, and Yeogi-eottae offer the widest selection. International visitors may find Booking.com or Agoda more user-friendly — just book early.

🎒 What to Bring — Essential Packing List

Packing for a mud festival is very different from packing for regular sightseeing. Getting this right makes the difference between a great day and a frustrating one.

Clothes you can throw away are the single most important item. Mud stains are extremely difficult to remove, so wear something you won't be sad to lose. The most common outfit is a swimsuit with a cheap t-shirt over it. Don't wear anything you care about — seriously.

Shoes you can sacrifice. Flip-flops or aqua shoes are ideal. Sneakers or any closed-toe shoes will become a heavy, muddy mess that you'll never want to wear again. Many people buy cheap 3,000-won sandals from a nearby convenience store specifically for the festival.

A waterproof phone case is essential if you want any photos from inside the mud zones. You can buy one at the festival entrance for about 5,000 won, but they're cheaper if you prepare one beforehand. Without it, your phone goes into a locker and you get zero mud photos.

A change of clothes and a towel for after. Shower facilities are available inside the festival grounds but lines can be long. Many people do a quick rinse in the ocean at Daecheon Beach and change on the spot. Having a complete change of clothes including underwear in a bag you leave outside the mud zone is essential.

Sunscreen and water are non-negotiable for any summer outdoor event in Korea. Dehydration creeps up quickly when you're having fun under the July sun, so drink water frequently.

Cash — at least 30,000 to 50,000 won in small bills. Food and beverage items cannot be brought into the festival grounds, so you'll need to buy everything from vendors inside. Many stalls accept cash only. Ardentnews

🍜 Food — At the Festival & Nearby

Inside the festival grounds, a Global Food Zone and Local Delivery Zone operate throughout the event, along with Boryeong specialty product booths. KB

The in-festival food options cover all the Korean festival classics — chicken skewers, tteokbokki, hotdogs, corn dogs, shaved ice, and plenty of cold beer. Prices are typical festival markup but nothing outrageous.

The real culinary treasure, though, is the seafood at restaurants around Daecheon Beach. Boryeong is a coastal city with incredibly fresh catches. Grilled clams, seafood knife-cut noodles (haemul kalguksu), and steamed blue crab are the local specialties you absolutely should try. The ideal plan is to enjoy the mud during the day, clean up, and then have a proper seafood dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants as the sun goes down. It's the perfect way to end a day at the mud festival.

⚠️ Important Rules & Safety

A few rules and safety notes to keep in mind for a smooth experience.

Pets are only allowed in the designated pet zone — they cannot enter the general mud experience areas. Food and drinks from outside cannot be brought into the festival grounds, so eat before entering or plan to buy from vendors inside. Ardentnews

Avoid the mud zones if you've been drinking. The mud pools and slides are slippery, and alcohol significantly increases the risk of injury. Save the beer for after you're done with the mud — the beach bars will be waiting.

Store all valuables in the on-site lockers before entering any mud zone. Losing a phone or wallet in a mud pool is essentially losing it forever — the mud is deep and opaque. Lockers are available for a small fee near the zone entrances.

Weather can change quickly in Korean summers. Rain is possible on any day, but here's the thing — rain actually makes the mud festival better. Many experienced festival-goers say rainy days are the most fun because the mud gets even more slippery and the crowds thin out slightly. Don't let rain change your plans.

🌟 Why Boryeong is Special — Beyond the Mud

If you have an extra day, Boryeong itself is worth exploring beyond the festival grounds. Daecheon Beach is beautiful even without the festival — 3.5 kilometers of clean white sand facing the West Sea. The Boryeong Mud Experience Center operates year-round if you want a more relaxed mud spa experience. And the coastal scenery along Boryeong's 136-kilometer shoreline offers dramatic cliffs, quiet fishing villages, and fresh seafood restaurants that most tourists never discover.

The city also produces an entire line of mud-based skincare products — mud masks, mud soap, and mud lotion — that make unique souvenirs. You can find them at shops throughout the festival grounds and in Boryeong city.

💡 Final Pro Tips

Best days to visit: The first weekend (July 25-26) has the most energy and the biggest performances. Weekdays have shorter lines and more space. The final weekend has a "last chance" atmosphere that's also special.

Best time of day: Arrive around 11AM for mud activities, take a break during the hottest afternoon hours (2-4PM), then return for evening performances starting around 7PM.

The golden rule of the mud festival: Commit 100%. The people having the most fun are the ones who dove in completely on their first minute. Half-covered-in-mud is not nearly as enjoyable as fully-covered-in-mud. Let go of your inhibitions, embrace the mess, and you'll understand why 3 million people come back every single year.
