🎆 Pohang International Fireworks Festival Complete Guide | East Coast's Premier Fireworks Event 2026!

by Korea Guide 2026. 6. 9.

If you want to witness spectacular fireworks exploding over the ocean on a warm summer night, head to Korea's east coast. The Pohang International Fireworks Festival is the signature cultural tourism festival of Pohang — the "City of Fire and Light" — painting the skies above Yeongildae Beach with breathtaking pyrotechnics every summer.

The festival began in 2004 as a fireworks show commemorating Pohang Citizens' Day, built around the symbolic imagery of "light" representing the world-class steel city and "fire" representing its blazing furnaces. It has since grown into a full international festival, with renowned fireworks teams from Canada, Italy, and other countries participating every year, competing to showcase their artistry in the night sky.

This is far more than a simple fireworks display. Drone light shows, illumination parades, light art installations, and busking performances combine industry and culture into a celebration of harmony. Widely regarded as one of Korea's finest fireworks festivals, here's everything you need to know to experience it.

📅 Essential Information

The Pohang International Fireworks Festival is typically held during summer (late July to early August) at Yeongildae Beach and the Pohang waterfront area. The exact 2026 dates will be announced on the Pohang Cultural Foundation's official website (festival.phcf.or.kr), so be sure to confirm before planning your visit.

The festival centers on Yeongildae Beach. Because the fireworks are launched over the ocean, the experience offers an openness and grandeur that inland fireworks festivals simply cannot match. Sitting on the beach with the cool sea breeze, watching fireworks bloom across both the night sky and the ocean's reflective surface simultaneously, is genuinely special.

Most programs are free to watch, with only some premium seating areas requiring paid tickets.

🎆 Main Programs

The festival's main programs include the International Fireworks Show (Korea, Canada, Italy), drone light shows, the Light Art Way, street parades, and daily fireworks shows.

🎇 International Fireworks Show

The undisputed highlight is the International Fireworks Show. World-class fireworks teams from Korea, Canada, Italy, and other nations participate, each showcasing their unique techniques and artistry. Each country's display is choreographed perfectly to music, unfolding like a massive work of living art. Fireworks launched over the ocean reflect off the water, appearing twice as brilliant — a signature spectacle you can only witness at Yeongildae Beach.

🚁 Drone Light Show

The drone light show represents the newest trend in fireworks festivals, and it's not to be missed. Hundreds of drones create intricate patterns and images in the night sky, delivering a different kind of awe than traditional fireworks. The displays representing Pohang's symbols and messages through coordinated drone formations are especially impressive — a stunning fusion of technology and art.

🎨 Light Art Way & Illumination Parade

Throughout the festival period, downtown Pohang and the beach area are decorated with colorful light installations. You can stroll along the Light Art Way admiring artworks made of light, while the illumination parade fills the streets with brilliantly decorated processions. The perfect itinerary: arrive in the afternoon to enjoy the beach, admire the light art in the early evening, and finish the night with the spectacular fireworks show.

📍 Best Viewing Spots — Where to Watch?

The primary viewing areas are Yeongildae Beach and the Pohang waterfront section. Securing a good spot requires a bit of strategy.

Directly facing the beach offers the most immersive view. The fireworks unfold right in front of you, and you can see the ocean's reflection in a single breathtaking panorama. However, this prime area is extremely popular, so arrive early. On main fireworks nights, claiming a spot on the beach from the late afternoon and waiting until evening is the surest approach.

Slightly to the side of the beach has relatively fewer crowds. While the angle is slightly off-center, the view of the fireworks is still excellent, and you can enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.

For tripod photography, the outer zones are better than the dead center. Fewer people means easier camera setup, and these positions are advantageous for composing shots that capture both the ocean and the fireworks together.

For families, the middle zones with shorter walking distances are most convenient. Better access to restrooms and facilities, and easier to exit quickly with children.

Arriving too late makes it difficult to find a good spot, so a schedule of entering the beach in the late afternoon and staying through the evening is highly recommended!

🚆 Getting to Pohang

KTX (fastest option): Seoul Station to Pohang Station takes approximately 2 hours 20 minutes for about 53,300 won. From Pohang Station, Yeongildae Beach is about 20 minutes by taxi or 30 minutes by bus.

Express Bus: Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Pohang takes approximately 4 hours for 28,000-35,000 won.

Driving: During the festival, traffic around Yeongildae Beach becomes extremely congested. Fireworks festival weekends draw heavy vehicle traffic, making parking genuinely difficult, and exiting after the show takes a long time. If possible, use public transport, or park in the city center and travel by foot or taxi.

On festival days, day-tour shuttle packages for the Pohang Fireworks Festival are available through services like Klook — if transportation is a concern, these packages are a convenient option.

🏨 Where to Stay

On fireworks festival weekends, ocean-view accommodations sell out fast and prices rise. Booking early is genuinely important.

Accommodations directly facing Yeongildae Beach have the enormous advantage of watching the fireworks from your room. Enjoying the display from your balcony is a true luxury, but these rooms are expensive and sell out quickly.

Accommodations within a 15-20 minute walk are perfectly practical. Even if you're not right on the beachfront, being within walking distance of the festival grounds is ideal — and prices are more reasonable.

Pohang city center accommodations are the most budget-friendly choice. You'll need a taxi or bus to reach Yeongildae, but the city center has plenty of restaurants and conveniences.

The moment festival dates are announced, booking accommodation immediately is strongly recommended!

Homigot

🍜 Pohang Food — Don't Miss Mulhoe!

The festival grounds have various food stalls, but if you've traveled all the way to Pohang, you must try the city's signature dishes.

Mulhoe is Pohang's iconic dish. Fresh raw fish served in a cold, sweet-and-sour broth, it's a refreshing dish that instantly washes away summer heat. Pohang mulhoe is famous nationwide — there's even an entire street dedicated to mulhoe restaurants.

Gwamegi is another Pohang specialty, but since it's a winter delicacy, you won't find it during the summer festival. Instead, enjoy fresh sashimi and seafood stews.

Guryongpo snow crab is another Pohang point of pride. Guryongpo is a bit outside the city center, but if you want to taste fresh snow crab, it's worth the trip.

During the festival, many street food tents and seafood restaurants open around Yeongildae Beach. Enjoying a plate of sashimi with a cold beer while watching the ocean is one of the festival's great pleasures!

🗺️ Festival + Pohang Tourism Itinerary

Since you've made it to Pohang, seeing only the fireworks festival would be a shame. Explore Pohang's attractions too.

Homigot is Pohang's representative attraction. It's the spot where the sun rises earliest on the Korean peninsula, famous for the giant hand-shaped sculpture "Sangsaeng-ui Son" (Hands of Harmony) rising from the sea. It's also a premier sunrise viewing location.

Space Walk is a massive track-shaped interactive sculpture in Pohang's Hwanho Park. Symbolizing the steel city of Pohang, you can climb the staircase structure for panoramic views of the city and ocean. Best of all, admission is free!

Yeongildae Beach is both the festival venue and a beautiful beach year-round. Walking out to the Yeongildae pavilion installed over the water rewards you with sweeping ocean views.

For a 2-day trip, I recommend the fireworks festival on day one, then Homigot sunrise → Space Walk → mulhoe lunch on day two!

💡 Visitor Tips

The fireworks festival is an outdoor event in peak summer, so heat preparation is essential. Daytime sun is strong, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and possibly a parasol. Since you'll be sitting on the beach for a while, a picnic mat or folding chair makes a big difference.

Light rain may not stop the event, but strong winds or severe weather can change the schedule. Always check the official website for the schedule before visiting.

The fireworks show peaks in the evening, but securing a good spot requires arriving from the late afternoon. Bring snacks, drinks, and a portable charger for the wait.

Bring 30,000-50,000 won in cash. Beachside food tents and street vendors sometimes accept cash only.

Finally, when the festival ends, crowds pour out all at once and traffic becomes extremely congested. Move at a relaxed pace, or start heading out just before the fireworks finish — a useful strategy for avoiding the worst of the crowds.

🌟 Why the Pohang Fireworks Festival is Worth the Trip

Most fireworks shows happen over a river or a city plaza. What makes Pohang special is the ocean. There's something profoundly different about fireworks reflected on the open sea — the way the colors double in the water, the way the salt breeze carries the sound, the way the horizon disappears into darkness punctuated by bursts of light. Combined with the international competition format, drone artistry, and the warm, welcoming character of this east-coast steel city, the Pohang International Fireworks Festival offers an experience that's genuinely distinct from anything in Seoul or Busan.

For international visitors especially, Pohang offers a chance to experience a side of Korea that most tourists never see — an industrial port city with surprising natural beauty, incredible seafood, and a community that takes deep pride in its festival. It's the kind of authentic regional Korea experience that turns a trip into a memory.
