In the heart of summer, a bite of red, sweet watermelon is the ultimate fruit for forgetting the heat. And there's a refreshing summer festival themed entirely around this beloved fruit — the Yangpyeong Watermelon Festival in Gyeonggi Province. Now in its second year, this family-friendly summer festival is built around the "3W" theme: sweet Watermelon, refreshing Water play, and healthy Wellness (agricultural specialties).

There's a reason Yangpyeong watermelons are especially delicious. The Yangpyeong region, including Cheongun-myeon, grows watermelons in a clean natural environment with abundant sunlight and large day-night temperature swings. The greater the temperature gap between day and night, the more sugar accumulates in the watermelon, making it sweeter and crisper. That's why Yangpyeong watermelons are beloved by consumers every year for their high sweetness and crisp texture.

Close to the greater Seoul area, it's great for a day trip, and with free admission, you can enjoy it without any burden. Here's everything you need to know about the Yangpyeong Watermelon Festival, where you can beat the heat with sweet watermelon and refreshing water play!

📅 2026 Essential Information

The 2026 Yangpyeong Watermelon Festival runs from July 4 (Saturday) to July 5 (Sunday) — two days at 2 Yongdu Minsok Jangteo-gil, Cheongun-myeon, Yangpyeong County, Gyeonggi Province. Held in early July when summer truly begins and watermelon is at its peak season, it's a festival held when watermelon tastes its best.

The festival venue is Yongdu Folk Market. You can enjoy the watermelon festival in a traditional market atmosphere. Admission is free, with only watermelon purchases and some experiences/food requiring payment. As a free festival, it's great for families to visit without any burden.

It's hosted by the Cheongun-myeon Watermelon Festival Committee, and inquiries can be made at 031-770-3226. Detailed information is available on the official website (watermelonfestival.kr). Running for two days, it's perfect for a weekend outing.

🍉 Watermelon — Yangpyeong's Sweet Pride

The star of the Yangpyeong Watermelon Festival is undoubtedly watermelon. The taste of freshly harvested Yangpyeong watermelon enjoyed in its hometown is truly special.

At the watermelon promotion and sales area, you can directly purchase Yangpyeong watermelons boasting high sweetness. Freshly harvested in its hometown, the freshness and sweetness are top-notch. Buying a watermelon to take home makes a great souvenir and gift.

Various watermelon-based foods are abundant too. Watermelon slush (cup 5,000 won, bottle 6,000 won), watermelon juice, watermelon bingsu (shaved ice, 8,000 won), watermelon ice cream, watermelon cookies, and even watermelon jam! On a hot summer day, one cup of cool watermelon slush washes the heat away. There are even unique drinks like watermelon makgeolli and Yangpyeong watermelon highball for adults to enjoy.

A special menu item is watermelon yeolmu guksu (noodles with watermelon and young radish, 9,000 won) — a unique noodle dish you can only taste at the Yangpyeong Watermelon Festival!

🚆 Getting to Yangpyeong Cheongun-myeon

Yangpyeong is located in the eastern part of Gyeonggi Province with good accessibility from the greater Seoul area. Being close to Seoul, it's great for a day trip.

Driving is the most convenient. It takes about 1 to 1.5 hours from Seoul. Enter "Yongdu Folk Market" or "2 Yongdu Minsok Jangteo-gil, Cheongun-myeon, Yangpyeong County" into your navigation. Parking space is available near the festival grounds.

Public transport is also possible. Take the Gyeongui-Jungang Line train to Yangpyeong Station or Yongmun Station, then travel by bus or taxi toward Cheongun-myeon. However, since Cheongun-myeon is a bit removed from central Yangpyeong, checking the bus timetable in advance is wise.

🏨 Accommodation & Yangpyeong Tourism

Yangpyeong is full of natural attractions. Dumulmeori is where the North Han River and South Han River meet, a beautiful photo spot famous for water mist and sunrises. Semiwon is a water garden famous for lotus and water lilies, especially beautiful in summer. Yangpyeong Wildflower Arboretum is also great for a family outing.

Yangpyeong is famous as "clean-water Yangpyeong," so its nature is pristine. The scenery spreading along the South Han River is beautiful, with many cafes and restaurants throughout. Yangpyeong is also famous for hanwoo (Korean beef), otchae-dak (lacquer tree chicken), and Yangpyeong haejang-guk (hangover soup), making it great for a culinary trip too.

Cooling off at the watermelon festival and then enjoying Yangpyeong's beautiful nature at Dumulmeori and Semiwon makes for a perfect summer outing!

💡 Visitor Tips

Since it's a watermelon festival, buying fresh watermelon to take home is recommended. Watermelon freshly harvested in its hometown of Yangpyeong has top sweetness and freshness. Since watermelons are heavy, visiting by car makes them easier to take home.

If you'll be enjoying water play with children, bring a change of clothes and a towel. Preparing so you can change after water play is a good idea.

Early July may overlap with the monsoon season. Bring an umbrella or rain poncho. Some outdoor programs may change if it rains, so check the schedule before visiting.

As a midsummer outdoor festival, heat preparation is essential. Bring sunscreen and a hat, and stay hydrated. Fortunately, there are many cool foods like watermelon slush and watermelon bingsu, perfect for cooling off.

Since the festival runs for only two days, be sure to check the dates before visiting. Planning it as a weekend outing is ideal. Bring both cash and card — you'll need them for watermelon purchases and food. The biggest advantage is that being a free festival, you can enjoy it without any burden!
